The findings are based on a survey of 436 men, aged 18 to 67, who responded to an Internet survey after being recruited through newspaper ads and a blog on a condom sales company Web site. The survey asked the men about how a condom fit the last time they used one while having sex with a female.

Nearly 45 percent said they’d used a condom that fit poorly the last time they had sex during the previous three months. These men were more than 2.5 times more likely to say their condom broke or slipped compared to those who said their condoms fit well. And they were five times more likely to say they experienced irritation to the penis.

The men whose condoms fit poorly were also about twice as likely to say that the condoms made it difficult for them, their partners or both to reach orgasm. Not surprisingly, this made intercourse less pleasurable, the study authors noted.

And the men with poor-fitting condoms were twice as likely to say they took off the condoms before they finished having sex, the survey found.

The findings “emphasize the point that men and their female sex partners may benefit from public health efforts designed to promote the improved fit of condoms,” the researchers wrote.

The study, which surveyed men through the Web site of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, is published online in February in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.

A total of 71 percent of men who were sexually active above age 75 reported a good sex life, compared with 51 percent of women, while 41 percent of men said they were interested in sex, compared to 11 percent of women.

“Overall, men were more likely than women to be sexually active, report a good quality sex life, and be interested in sex,” the researchers found.

“This disparity, and its implication for health, requires further exploration.”

The researchers found the average person’s sex life winds down by the age of 70. It said that by age 55, men can hope for another 15 years while women generally have another 11 years of sexual activity.

But 55-year-old men in very good or excellent health gained five to seven years of sexually active life on average, compared with their peers in poor or fair health. Women in very good or excellent health gained three to six years compared with women in poor or fair health.

The research adds to a pile of scientific evidence suggesting good sex can improve health and well-being — and vice versa.

The researchers found that, overall, people in very good or excellent health were 1.5 to 1.8 times more likely to report an interest in sex than those in poorer health.

Researchers Stacy Tessler Lindau and Natalia Gavrilova looked at data from two groups of just over 3,000 American men and women — one aged 25 to 74 and the other aged 57 to 85.

Subjects were interviewed and filled in questionnaires on their marital status, rated the quality of their sex lives and asked how often they had sex. They also rated their health on a scale between poor and excellent.

In an accompanying editorial, Patricia Goodson, a professor of health at Texas A&M University, said the study was “refreshing because it offers a health enhancing, health promoting perspective. … The news that adults in the U.S. can enjoy many years of sexual activity beyond age 55 is promising.”

“No one cares about Mr. Joe Average, the sex addict,” Weiss says. “But when we hear about Tiger Woods—who has money and a beautiful wife—that gets people talking. You can bet that if women found out their own husbands were struggling with sex addiction, they would label it and treat it. It’s a disconnected opinion.”

“Women have a hard time believing that sexual compulsion exists because in part, they can’t relate to it,” says Ian Kerner, Ph.D., author of Sex Recharge. “During desire and sex, the female body produces higher levels of the feel-good chemical oxytocin, making sex more of an emotional act than it is for men.”

In other words, for women, this physiological response can act as a hormonal safeguard from developing an obsession—which explains why, according to Canning and Weiss, 90 percent of sex addicts are male.

So who are these guys? Famous or not, Canning says these men have an unusually intense sex drive and unhealthy preoccupation with sex, despite the negative consequences they bring. For many of these men, addiction is their way of trying to fill an emotional void that’s rarely satiated by one-night stands, masturbation, Internet porn—even loving, monogamous sex—all of which stimulate the dopamine-centers in the brain, providing euphoric thrills of gratification.

Psychiatric evaluation is essential to diagnosis, because according to Dr. Douglas Weiss, at the Heart to Heart Counseling Center in Colorado there are various types of sex addicts with triggers ranging from sexual trauma, neurological conditions, family issues, and mood or personality disorders.

Here, a look at what’s going on (and what isn’t) in sex rehabilitation programs around the country:

Sex addiction is treated like any other addiction.
There’s no “substance” involved—which is why the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) won’t acknowledge sex addiction as a “disease”. Yet many rehabs treat sex addiction as a chemical dependency as well as a behavioral one.

Patients follow the “12-step” ideology, which prohibits them from sexual stimulants (for e.g., porn) for 90 days—the amount of time it typically takes for brain chemicals to stop the cravings and for the body to undergo withdrawal, which can include depression, body aches, and lack of motivation.

The men who wore poorly fitting condoms were twice as likely to say that using one reduced sexual pleasure for themselves and their partners.

The findings may make some people giggle, but the researchers said the implications were serious. Men will often not buy condoms sized “small” or even “medium,” they said.

“Moreover, the increased likelihood that men using ill-fitting condoms will remove condoms before sex ends constitutes another form of condom failure. Fortunately, it seems likely that these problems could be rectified through education programs,” the researchers wrote.
